Theme Statement

Kingstonians live, work, and play in a community that promotes, protects, and enhances the physical, mental, and spiritual well-being of individuals and families by providing high quality health and wellness services including recreational facilities and programs.

Indicators

  • Access to Physicians (Physicians per 100,000 persons).
  • Percentage of residents that are obese or overweight (Percentage of residents reported as obese or overweight, by age cohorts).
  • Recreation Program Hours (Total participant hours for recreation programs per 1,000 persons).

Goals

  • Provide every citizen with doctors, healthcare practitioners and health care services that are accessible and efficient.
  • Advance Family Physician Recruitment & Retention activities to ensure every resident of Kingston has access to primary care in the community.
  • Provide and promote affordable, accessible recreation and leisure opportunities that support healthy and active lifestyles.
  • Promote and enhance the physical, mental and spiritual well-being of individuals and families.
  • Increase opportunities for those wishing to "age-in-place".

Health and Wellness Sessions At Strategic Benefits & Insurance Services Ltd. We provide health and wellness session to residents of Kingston, twice a year. Our spring session was successful and our fall session will focus on being healthy at work and at home.

Improve Access to Primary Healthcare KIHC is home to 3 Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) who provide primary care medical services similar to family physicians (MDs). NDs are licensed by the Ontario government to conduct physical exams, order blood tests, and diagnose. Their services are covered by most health insurance providers.

Card Factory The card factor, located at 525 Montreal Street, creates from recycled materials original handmade greeting cards designed to make a lasting impression. Cards can be designed to reflect your personal or corporate needs or event. Cards can be ordered directly or purchased in select stores in Kingston.

Hands On Car Wash VOCEC's first buisiness, Hands On Car Wash, contenues to thrive after 16 years in operation. Quality hand wash-and-dry car care, interior cleaning, wax and polish, as well as customized packages by its skilled associates are available at the 15 Russel Street location (off Montreal Street).

Tree-Free VOCEC The newest VOCEC business, Tree-Free VOCEC, a Canadian wholesale distributor, invovlves the shipping of environmentally friendly greeting cards and products across Canada.

Little Green Thumb Little Green Thumb provides garden care, garden design, creative containers and flower boxes, year-round flower bed maintenance, shrub and hedge pruning, vacation maintenance, fall and spring yard clean-up, and pesticide-free weed removal.

Book Ends Café Library patrons at the Central Branch of the Kingston-Frontenac Public Library, can enjoy refreshments including light lunches at the Bookends Café. The Café can also provide catering for your event.Remember to book your catering at the time of your room booking.

Westwood Canteen The canteen at Providence Care Mental Health Services at 752 King Street West is a hub of activity. Customers make it part of their daily routine to buy the many staples the canteen offers. Stop by for a great cut of coffee and a tasty treat!

Filling the Gaps in Seniors’ Programs and Health Services
Expand beyond The Seniors Centre by establishing off-site locations to increase seniors’ accessibility to recreational activities and health services.

 - To provide 5 new off-site health services by end of 2012.
 - To establish 10 off-site locations in partnership with other organizations, retirement residences and/or businesses.

Raising awareness of local health issues and providing education to the local community surrounding health and wellness. Examples include TVCOGECO's partnership with KFL&A for the live, one hour call-in show "Public Health Matters", the "Eat Local Challenge" - an award winning three part documentary series, and ongoing coverage of local sporting events including football, baseball, volleyball and other community sporting events.

Provides awareness of specialty urological nursing in Kingston and the area. UNC promotes education through presentations, clinical practice and research in the field of urology to include bladder, prostate and kidney diseases.

Changing the Culture of Alcohol Use in Kingston
This program aims to reduce alcohol-related harms in our community in order to achieve a positive impact on the health and wellness and safety for all Kingston residents.  A Check Your Drinking survey is available.

Community Physical Activity Pass
Every Grade 5 and 9 student in KFL&A receives a Community Physical Activity Pass in November of each year which entitles them to free access to community skate and swim times as well as 10 free visits to the YMCA and free use of the INVISTA Recreation Centre until the following August.

PRO Kids (Positive Recreation Opportunities for Kids)
A service dedicated to ensuring that recreation opportunities exist for children and youth who would not ordinarily be able to afford the cost of participation. The key to PRO Kids success is through its many partnerships with community recreation providers, who donate a limited number of reduced-cost spaces within their program.
