Theme Statement

By including, protecting, respecting, and sharing our community’s unique cultural heritage9, rich and diverse narratives, and local history, Kingstonians will have a better understanding of ourselves, others, and our world.

  • Assets in City's Heritage Register (Total number of registered and designated heritage assets).10

Goals

  • Continue to identify, protect, and promote11 Kingston’s cultural heritage resources such as its natural, built, and archaeological heritages that have contributed to Kingston’s uniqueness, identity, and sense of place.
  • Build local identity through increased public awareness and appreciation of Kingston’s non-tangible heritage assets represented in indigenous knowledge, shared experiences, oral history, traditional practices and skills, and local sense of place.
  • Define appropriate indicators for measuring heritage.

Heritage Trail Create a traveling cultural program for seniors to increase local public awareness and promote Kingston’s museums and art galleries heritage resources.

- Provide excursions to 6 local museums and art galleries (first pilot program)

- Guided Tour of exhibitions at each site
- Afternoon Tea at select sites

Pilot Program

Local History Collection The Local History Collection is a Reference and Circulating research collection consisting of works which relate to the history, geography, geology, culture and socio-economic composition of Frontenac County, with specific emphasis on Kingston.  Collection emphasis is on secondary source material including city directories and voter’s lists.

Historical Designated Buildings 2 library branches are attached to designated buildings.  The Central Library incorporates the Bishop’s House built in 1842 for Bishop MacDonnell. The Pittsburgh Branch incorporates Hawthorne Cottage, a rural limestone cottage built in 1866.

Museum Passes The Museum Pass program broadens access to the city's cultural life by providing families with the opportunity to visit selected city museums and art galleries for free. Patrons borrow and return a limited number of free passes to local museums and art galleries in the same way they would borrow library materials.

First Capital Day
Each June 15, Kingston celebrates its unique role in history as the 'First Capital' of United Canada with interactive fun for school kids and the general public. Teachers are invited to plan a class trip on June 15 to allow their kids to participate in the free First Capital Day festivities.

Annual Event

8 Heritage properties were discussed in both the Cultural Pillar meeting and the Environmental Pillar meeting. Please refer to the theme EN 5 Land Use and Built Environment for additional consideration of heritage properties.
9 Cultural Heritage includes both material and non-material heritage. The City of Kingston’s heritage program has won several awards for its heritage program including its efforts at policy and guidelines.
10 Attention should be directed to the ‘deep-mapping’ of Kingston’s intangible heritage that consists of qualitative accounts of the essence of this place as recorded in art, literature, narratives, and personal memories and reflections.
11 Cultural heritage tourism is considered a major component of the City’s tourism program. Please refer to the theme EC 5 Tourism for goals related to tourism.
