Community Partners

KFL&A Public Health

Kingston, Frontenac and Lennox & Addington (KFL&A) Public Health works with communities to promote and protect the public’s health by providing public health programs and services. An accredited organization of over 225 staff and 150 volunteers who deliver mandatory health programs and services set by the Province of Ontario in the Health Protection and Promotion Act, the underlying goal of their programs and services–from nutrition and food safety, raising healthy babies and children, sexual health, smoking cessation, and many other public health areas–is to promote and protect the health of the more than 180,000 residents of Kingston, Frontenac, and Lennox & Addington.

Safe Water Program
As part of the Ontario Building Code (Sewage Systems), Public Health Inspectors provide regulatory oversight of drinking water, recreational water use and sewage systems.

Changing the Culture of Alcohol Use in Kingston
This program aims to reduce alcohol-related harms in our community in order to achieve a positive impact on the health and wellness and safety for all Kingston residents.  A Check Your Drinking survey is available.

 

Reducing alcohol related harms in our community.

“It Starts Here: A Conversation about Alcohol in the City of Kingston”was launched at a community forum in November 2012.  The goal of this alcohol report is to identify the scope of alcohol-related harm in the City of Kingston, and to help motivate and guide key stakeholders and the community in the development of a local Alcohol Strategy.

Supporting the Education of Registered Dietitians
Internship supporting the professional licensing of dietetic interns so to positively contribute to the nutritional health of individuals, groups and the population as a whole.

For each year's group of dietetic interns to successfully pass the College of Dietitians entry exam, obtain their licenses to practice as Registered Dietitians and secure employment.

Active and Safe Routes to School (ASRTS)
Is an internal (ASRTS School Team Working Group), and external (School Commuting Working Group — sub-group of Kingston Coalition for Active Transportation), a group of KFL&A Public Health staff, and members of the community.

To increase physical activity levels of elementary and secondary school students, families and staff by encouraging the use of active transportation to, from and at school, thereby establishing a foundation of lifelong physical activity.

Community Physical Activity Pass
Every Grade 5 and 9 student in KFL&A receives a Community Physical Activity Pass in November of each year which entitles them to free access to community skate and swim times as well as 10 free visits to the YMCA and free use of the INVISTA Recreation Centre until the following August.

To increase the physical activity of youth by increasing their access to and participation in community recreation facilities.

Public Health Environmental Committee
An internal committee that leads in the identification, development, and promotion of strategies to foster a culture that supports active stewardship of the environment.

To establish a workplace culture that makes choosing to protect the environment the right and the easy choice.

Master of Public Health (MPH) Practicum
As part of  half-credit course, Foundations of Public Health Practice, at Queen’s University, KFL&A Public Health offers MPH students a 4-month practicum opportunity to apply their course work to the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of public health policies and programs.

To equip MPH graduates to practice competently in public health.

Workplace Wellness Program
Increase awareness of chronic diseases by creating healthy workplaces.

Nutritious Food Basket
A survey used to monitor the cost and affordability of healthy eating in Canada.  The survey includes 67 food items found in Canada’s Food Guide and used to prepare nutritious meals and snacks.
