Community Partners

City of Kingston

The City of Kingston is located on the north shore of Lake Ontario within a few hours driving distance of Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto. It offers excellent educational, health, cultural and recreational facilities. The City of Kingston employs approximately 1,100 people and delivers a full range of services at locations throughout the City. It bases its administrative processes on a customer service philosophy.

First Capital Day
Each June 15, Kingston celebrates its unique role in history as the 'First Capital' of United Canada with interactive fun for school kids and the general public. Teachers are invited to plan a class trip on June 15 to allow their kids to participate in the free First Capital Day festivities.

City of Kingston Agricultural Study Report
An initiative of the Department of Planning and Development.

Completion of a study of agricultural conditions in Kingston that makes recommendations for policy improvements to be considered for the new Official Plan.

The Agricultural Study was completed in March, 2007 and recommendations were used to allow for protection of prime agricultural lands and other aspects of agriculture within Kingston's New Official Plan.

PRO Kids (Positive Recreation Opportunities for Kids)
A service dedicated to ensuring that recreation opportunities exist for children and youth who would not ordinarily be able to afford the cost of participation. The key to PRO Kids success is through its many partnerships with community recreation providers, who donate a limited number of reduced-cost spaces within their program.

 

Provide financial assistance to children in need so that they may participate in recreation and sport activities.

Brownfield's Community Improvement Plan
A plan to reduce brownfield properties in Kingston.

General reduction in brownfield properties in Kingston.

New Official Plan
A new Official Plan for the City of Kingston to replace and consolidate the 3 previous Official Plans of the former City of Kingston, Kingston Township and Pittsburgh Township.

Completion of a new Official Plan for the City of Kingston by 2010.

The new Official Plan was completed and in force on January 27, 2010.

Green Bin Program
A program that collects source separated organic wastes from Kingston residents and processes that waste into valuable high-quality compost.

Contributes to an overall target of a residential diversion from landfill rate of 60%.

Over 2000 tonnes of organic waste not landfilled since April 2009.

Water Restriction Bylaw
Creation and enforcement of the Bylaw (2006).

Municipal Green Building Program
A policy that requires all new municipal buildings to be constructed to obtain Silver certification under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program to ensure minimized energy and water use and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from facility operations.

Minimum LEED Silver rating for all new municipal buildings.

2 buildings certified LEED Gold, 1 building certified LEED Silver and 3 other buildings have certification pending.

Community Green House Gas Inventory
Determine how many tonnes of greenhouse gases are emitted by the entire Kingston community. More information is available on the website.

Princess Street Reconstruction Project
A project in partnership with Utilities Kingston.

A coordinated reconstruction of lower Princess Street (Lake Ontario to King Street) to replace the road and sidewalk systems, improve the streetscape and modernize underlying sewer, water and other utilities.

Scheduled start in March 2010. Completion by July 2010.

In partnership with KEDCO, Kingston Community Health Centres, and KEYS. A website that provides critical information to new immigrants and others considering settling in Kingston.

Cultural Master Plan
The purpose of the Kingston Culture Plan is to articulate a sustainable, authentic, long-term vision for cultural vitality in Kingston; to identify possibilities for connections between cultural organizations and other stakeholders as well as opportunities for collaboration among City departments to achieve municipal strategic objectives; and to develop strategic directions, initiatives and recommendations for action and an implementation timeline.
